Vitality Wildcard Watch: Who's standing out in the Vitality Blast?
FEATUREWith the Vitality Wildcard Draft coming soon before this year's The Hundred, take a look at some of the in-form names who will be hoping for selection.
This summer, each of The Hundred teams will have their opportunity to sign a standout player from the domestic circuit as a Vitality Wildcard; rewarding players who have excelled in the Vitality Blast.
Here's a look at some of the players, without a contract for The Hundred this year, who have caught our eye in the Blast.
Week 3 - 10-18 June
Women's Competition
Daisy Gibb - Hampshire Hawks
Right-arm pace bowler Daisy Gibb had quite the match against Bears, taking three wickets in four consecutive balls, including that of the big-hitting Australian Laura Harris. Gibb has been used throughout the innings and has shown herself to be economical and reliable with the ball.
Kira Chathli - Surrey
No keeper has more stumpings than Kira Chathli's four, and with three catches alongside, she leads the way among keepers for batters dismissed. Chathli's glovework is fast and smart, and she can also bat anywhere in the top five. She made 10 appearances for Oval Invincibles in 2022 and 2023, before being an unused Trent Rockets squad member in 2024.
Sophie Morris - Lancashire Thunder
A left-arm spin bowler, Morris has developed a knack for taking big wickets in the Vitality Blast. Her eight dismissals have all been batters in the top five - the players who are the most likely to impact a match. That included both of Surrey's very dangerous opening pair, Bryony Smith and Danni Wyatt-Hodge.
Mollie Robbins - Somerset
Playing on loan from Gloucestershire, right-arm pace bowler Robbins has been impressive for Somerset. On two occasions, she has taken three wickets in a match, having been used as the opening bowler. Only England star Charlie Dean has more wickets for Somerset so far in the Vitality Blast.
Men's Competition
Ben Kellaway - Glamorgan
Have you heard the one about the man who bowls with both arms? It's not a joke and there's no punchline - it's simply Ben Kellaway's style. He bowls spin but is capable of doing so using either his left or his right arm. And he's so good at it that it looks like an exact mirror image when he swaps. Kellaway has a handful of wickets so far, doing so with both arms, and he bats too, hitting a rapid 53 runs in Glamorgan's win over Gloucestershire.
Farhan Ahmed - Notts Outlaws
The 17-year-old brother of England international and Trent Rockets all-rounder Rehan, Farhan Ahmed has made just one Vitality Blast appearance. But he made quite the impression. Tasked with opening the bowling, Ahmed bowled Alex Davies with just his sixth ball to make him one of the Blast's youngest wicket-takers. Ahmed turns the ball into right-handed batters and has already been capped at England Under-19 level.
Ben Raine - Durham
Ben Raine played nine The Hundred matches between 2021 and 2023, and his form so far this summer might earn him some more appearances. The right-arm pace bowler has taken wickets in each of his first seven Vitality Blast matches in 2025, and he's one of just six players to take five wickets in a match.
Justin Broad - Northamptonshire Steelbacks
With two fifties in this year's Vitality Blast, Justin Broad's short-form cricket pedigree is beginning to grow. Those scores came in 23 and 30 balls, respectively, both scores that helped set up victory for his side. Broad offers something with the ball too, taking two wickets and conceding fewer than a run per ball against Durham.
Week 2 - 3-9 June
Women's competition
Esmae MacGregor - Essex
We featured Esmae MacGregor last week, having taken the women's Blast by storm, and the 20-year-old continued her fine start to the season with Essex, picking up another five wickets across two fixtures in the gameweek.
MacGregor tops the wicket-taking charts in the women's competition, with 11 scalps in just four games, and only Ben Sanderson has more in the men's competition. MacGregor is surely bowling herself to contract for The Hundred this August.
Tilly Kesteven - Lancashire Thunder
Twenty-year-old Kesteven has been accumulating runs for the Thunder so far this summer. She's reached at least 24 in three of her last five games, and scored an eye-catching 77 in the Vitality County Cup Finals Day in Taunton shortly before the Blast got underway.
While a big score is yet to appear in the Blast for Kesteven, her ability to get in and record a decent score will have been noticed by the Hundred teams.
Alice Macleod - Essex
Alice Macleod hit what turned out to be a match-winning 44 against Bears Women at Chelmsford on 4 June, scoring five boundaries in her 24-ball knock.
She's enjoyed a strike rate of over 100 in three of her four Blast innings to date, with her ability to push the score on while batting at number three being a sought-after skill in The Hundred.
Millie Taylor - Bears Women
Taylor sits second behind MacGregor on the wicket-taking list, picking up eight victims in six games so far. Taylor had a slow start to the competition; wicketless in the Bears' first two games, but has found her rhythm in recent fixtures, taking five wickets in her last two matches.
Men's competition
Ben Sanderson - Northamptonshire Steelbacks
The Steelbacks have had an excellent start to their Blast campaign, topping the North Group with five wins from five games, largely thanks to the performances of their, ahem, more experienced players. Ben Sanderson, aged 36, is enjoying a purple patch in form which has seen him take 14 wickets in five games, including a remarkable 6/8 - the third best match figures in Blast history.
Ravi Bopara - Northamptonshire Steelbacks
We can't mention Sanderson's input for Northamptonshire without referencing Ravi Bopara's influence with the bat this year as well. Bopara turned 40 (!) in May and would be the second oldest player in The Hundred 2025, behind Wayne Madsen, should he be picked up by any of the eight teams.
Scores of 46*, 84*, 36 and 28 in his last four innings have played a large part in the Steelbacks' success, and with experience in The Hundred already under his belt, Bopara would be a great addition to any dressing room this August.
Toby Albert - Hampshire Hawks
A player on the other end of the age scale now, Toby Albert has done something that few have managed in recent years - outperforming James Vince in white-ball cricket. Albert is opening the batting with his team captain for Hampshire this summer, and has racked up 55 more runs than Vince in the Hawks' first four matches.
Albert scored an unbeaten 73 as Hampshire cruised to victory over reigning champions Gloucestershire on 6 June - his second half-century of the campaign so far.
George Scrimshaw - Northamptonshire Steelbacks
Northamptonshire's performances have been so good that we're including three of their players in this list, and probably could add a few more. George Scrimshaw has experience in The Hundred, featuring for Welsh Fire in 2022 and may be playing his way into a Wildcard berth come August.
Scrimshaw's eight wickets in the Vitality Blast so far sees him sit joint-fouth in the standings, with his 4/19 against Lancashire Lightning on 8 June being the highlight. There aren't many 6ft 7in bowlers doing the rounds, so good performances mixed with his imposing physical stature mean that Scrimshaw is a front-runner for a Vitality Wildcard pick.
Week 1 - until 2 June
Women's competition
Esmae MacGregor - Essex
What better way to announce yourself to the Vitality Blast than to take six wickets across your first two matches, including leading a rout of Somerset in a big double-header at Chelmsford?
Esmae MacGregor followed up her two wickets in the first match of the competition with an incredible four wickets for eight runs, as Essex bowled Somerset out for just 84. MacGregor also bowled 12 dots in her 20-ball spell.
Olivia Barnes - Somerset
Her team may have lost to Essex, but Barnes stood out for her excellent fielding. The left-arm spinner took a couple of stunning catches behind square on the leg side off the bowling of Amanda-Jade Wellington, including a leaping effort at square-leg to provide a bright spot for the West Country side.
Gemma Porter - Glamorgan
In a low-scoring affair, Glamorgan's Gemma Porter almost helped her side pull off the impossible of defending just 77 against Middlesex at Northwood. Having been bowled out cheaply, Porter conceded just seven runs in 24 balls bowled, taking three wickets, as Middlesex took 119 of their 120 balls to reach their target.
Rachel King - Sussex Sharks
Having missed out on Sussex Sharks' opening match against Middlesex at Lord's, Rachel King came into the side and impressed in their victory over Gloucestershire. Opening the innings at Hove, King was not out for 68 from 54 balls, hitting nine fours, as the Sharks racked up an unassailable 148 runs.
Men's competition
Jack Haynes - Notts Outlaws
Haynes was picked by Oval Invincibles as their Wildcard in 2022, but only featured in one match for the London side. He has started the 2025 Vitality Blast in some style, though, showing off his power hitting and match-winning abilities in Notts Outlaws' massive chase to beat Bears Men.
He smashed 89 from 41 balls as Notts chased down 226 at Trent Bridge, sharing a 101-run partnership with Moises Henriques.
Matt Critchley - Essex
It was something of a surprise that Critchley wasn't picked up in the 2025 Hundred Draft, given his batting and bowling abilities and experience in previous years with Welsh Fire and London Spirit.
Back with Essex in the Blast, Critchley started his campaign well despite his team's early struggles. A quick 50 in a losing cause against Somerset, plus two wickets in his first two games, will keep the leg-spinning all-rounder in the Wildcard spotlight.
Yousef Majid - Surrey
A new name on the block, given he only made his T20 debut at the end of May, but Surrey's Yousef Majid is one of a handful of young spinners to keep an eye on for a Wildcard berth. White-ball teams covet spinners and a solid start to his Blast campaign could push Majid's name up the list.
The former England U19 off-spinner took two wickets for 26 runs on debut as Surrey lost to Somerset and he'll be looking for more opportunities to impress as the competition progresses.
Sir James Anderson - Lancashire Lightning
Could Jimmy Anderson be the first knight of the realm to play in The Hundred? He went unpicked in the Draft earlier in the year, but an impressive return to the Lancashire Lightning team could lead to one of the teams prising him from the commentary box this August.
Anderson played his first T20 match since 2014 on 1 June as Lancashire beat Durham, with the seamer taking an impressive three wickets for just 17 runs from his four overs. The guy's still got it!
